WEEK # 10 - February 25th - March 1st

Do What Jesus Commands

Devotion: Do What Jesus Commands

Scripture Learning Verse:
John 14:15
If you love me, you will obey what I command.

K5 through second-grade

Devotion Text:

(Make a simple heart from red construction paper. If it is February, show a Valentine card.)

(Show the heart or card.) What is this? What does it make you think of? Who would you give or send this to? Why? (Allow for responses.)

Valentine cards and hearts are one of the ways we show love. Who are some of the people you love? How do you show your love for them?

How can we show our love for Jesus? Can we send him a valentine or make him a heart? Perhaps, but our Bible verse tells us the best way to show our love for Jesus. The verse is found in the Book of John.

(Read the verse.)

What did Jesus say we will do if we love him? (We will obey him. We will keep his commands.) God showed his love for us by sending Jesus. Let’s ask God to help us show our love for Jesus by doing what he wants us to do.

Third and fourth grade

(Read the verse.)

What did Jesus say we will do if we really love him? (Obey his commands.) The Bible tells us that God loves us no matter what we do. If that is true, then why do we bother being good? What difference does it make how we behave or whether or not we keep God’s commands? (Allow for responses.)

Our verse reminds us that we obey in order to show our love for Jesus. Let’s pray and ask God to help us do just that!

Fifth and sixth grade

Devotion Text:

(For this devotional, you will need a foreign language textbook. If possible, also obtain a copy ofThe Five Love Languagesby Dr. Gary Chapman.)

(Show the textbook.) Are any of you learning a foreign language? Do any of you know a language besides English? (Allow for responses.)

We use language to communicate. However, languages are not the only way we communicate— especially when it comes to communicating or showing love. Several years ago, a man named Gary Chapman wrote a book called The Five Love Languages. In the book, Dr. Chapman describes five ways that people show love for each other. Can you guess what some of them are? It may help to think of some of the people you love and of some of the ways you show that love.

(See how many of Chapman’s five love languages the players can name. The list follows.)

  1. Give gifts.
  2. Use words.
  3. Hug and hold.
  4. Do things for each other.
  5. Spend time together.

These are great ways to show love for others, and I hope you will learn them. Now here’s another question for you about showing love. How can you and I show love for Jesus? Our Bible verse has the answer.

(Read the verse.)
